How about this for a translation of "Gnade und Friede sei dir, bester Jonas, aber Tod und Hoelle deinem Stein durch die Kraft Christi" in ML's letter of December 16 to Justus Jonas?: "Grace and peace be to you, better Jonas, but be an attacker of death and hell through the power of Christ."?
Or like make a grave stone for death and hell or do you know something that I don't know? No doubt!

What year?? I would translate "bester" as "my good Jonas" or "my best Jonas". The "er" is the masculine ending and doesn't indicate the comparative here. I'll comment on the rest after I find the quote.

Turns out it was in Latin.

Gracem et pacem tibi, optime Iona (Jonas), mortem vero et infernum calculo tuo per virtutem Christi, Amen.

Anyway I think you have the general sense. Who knew calculus means pebble or stone? Wonder how you can fit that into your translation.

Thanks! I wasn't sure but it's on the blog with your previous correction! What is the term for a stein of bier? Still wondering if it might be the death of death and hell on your tombstone? Too hard fetched? After all, it's Memorial Day, right? Watch out for the Yankees. Love the Sox Manny and Ortiz.

Just thought of Christ's promise to Peter in Matthew 16: "Thou art Peter and upon this ROCK I will build my church and gates of hell will not prevail against it."

You're kidding. Here we were expecting something really profound.
