In a letter to Georg, Prince of Anhalt on 17 July 1536 ML writes:"Demnach will ich mit dem XXXVI Psalm an heiligen Vater un den Hellischen rothen Hut sterben, ob Gott will." ML is going to die after applying the condemnations of Psalm 36 against the Pope and the Cardinal???Noticed that the st. Louis Edition has substituted the singular for father instead of the plural fathers evidently in the original. Vater for Vaeter. Sorry, I don't do the umlauts.

My middle high german is not so good--but "die" usually denotes plural or feminine. Maybe he means popes in general.
