In a letter of 23 November 1535 ML writes of "eitel neuling" and other expressions for those who are not ready to be in charge of large congregations in Frankfurt including "doch das Geel am Schnabel nicht abgestossen". I am wondering whether might mean "yellow".

Meant to ask whether "GEEL" means" yellow "though capitalized. Yellow can be a noun, no doubt, but here?

You are so right. The commentary refers to "Gelbschnabel" meaning yellow beak which refers to unfledged birds. Also the comment says this doesn't refer to Melander because he was 50 years old, but it is a general comment.

Yes, I didn't see anyone named and don't remember running across Melander at all, dry behind the ears or not. And thanks!
